In this episode of Dangerous Women: Leading Onward, I have the privilege of speaking with the Executive Director of the African American Policy Forum, Kimberlé Crenshaw. Kimberlé’s work has been foundational in critical race theory and in “intersectionality,” a term she coined to describe the double bind of simultaneous racial and gender prejudice. Her studies, writing, and activism have identified key issues in the perpetuation of inequality, including the “school to prison pipeline” for African American children and the criminalization of behavior among Black teenage girls.
Kimberlé begins our conversation by dispelling myths that surround intersectionality. She says,
Intersectionality is not just a formula that you add up…it’s not a new idea to create pariahs…it’s a prism for conceptualizing and seeing the interactive effects of multiple forms of discrimination.
