Kathy Eldon on Creative Activism and Igniting Social Change with Media

Kathy Eldon, founder of Creative Visions Foundation, and a best-selling author, journalist, teacher, film and television producer, is a dangerous woman. I had the pleasure of speaking with Kathy in the most recent episode of Dangerous Women: Leading Onward, and discovered just how dangerous she can be when chasing a story.

We talked about Kathy’s journey from journalist to documentary filmmaker to film producer. Kathy’s son, Dan Eldon, a photojournalist documenting the unrest in Somalia, was killed in a riot along with three other journalists in 1993. He was 22 years old. The 2016 feature film The Journey Is the Destination (Watch on Netflix) chronicles Dan’s story.

Kathy’s organization, the Creative Visions Foundation, emboldens creative activists. Their mission is to spark awareness of critical issues and ignite change through impact media, art and technology: creative activism.

Kathy and I talked about the power of the arts to ignite social change and challenge oppression. She says,

“I’ve worked with a global tribe of individuals who are dedicated to awakening the world. Get off your backsides and do something — and try to make it entertaining along the way.”
